Why Has My Jewellery Tool Arrived Covered in Grease?!!!

This is one of the questions we're asked most often, especially by customers investing in their first dapping set, disc cutter, or other solid steel jewellery-making tool.

If you've just opened your parcel and found your new tool coated in grease, don't worry – it's completely normal and actually a good sign! The protective grease is applied before shipping to help prevent rust and corrosion, reduce friction between moving parts, and preserve the condition of the steel while the tool is being stored and transported.

Steel tools are susceptible to moisture and changes in temperature. The grease acts as a protective barrier, helping to ensure your tool arrives in excellent condition and is ready for years of reliable use.

In fact, if your tool arrives with grease on it, we generally recommend keeping it that way. Regularly applying a light machine oil or mineral oil (such as sewing machine oil) is a simple and effective way to continue protecting the steel and extending the life of your tool.

Of course, if you prefer to remove the grease before using your tool, that's absolutely fine too. A little warm water and washing-up liquid will easily remove the coating. Just bear in mind that once the protective layer is gone, the steel will be more vulnerable to rust, particularly if stored in a damp environment. If you do clean the grease off, we recommend drying the tool thoroughly and applying a light coat of oil afterwards to keep it protected.
