Enamel wafers and buttons are a wonderful addition to any enameller’s toolkit, offering an easy way to introduce delicate, flower-like decorative details to your designs. Made from long strands of pulled glass that are cut into thin chips, enamel wafers melt beautifully create soft, organic shapes. Enamel buttons are slightly larger than wafers, allowing them to retain more dimension and produce eye-catching 3D decorative effects.
These versatile embellishments can be attached to a pre-fired enamel surface using Klyr-Fire, making them ideal for adding details after your base colours have been fired. Alternatively, they can be placed onto layers of unfired enamel powder, where they will gently sink into the surface as the enamel fuses. As they melt, both wafers and buttons spread slightly, creating unique floral and petal-like forms.
For the sample piece shown here, we used a base of opaque sky blue enamel with a light layer of transparent pink sifted over the top. To complement the colour palette, we selected several wafers from the pink pack along with a single pink enamel button. The combination creates a soft, floral effect, with the larger button adding extra depth and visual interest to the finished piece.
