How to use ImpressArt stamps

Adding names, images, signs and symbols to jewellery is a fun way to make a creative, unique and individual piece. Metal stamps are a valuable tool for jewellery makers looking to achieve a patterned look or a personalised keepsake. Maddisons of Durham has a fantastic range of ImpressArt metal stamps– everything from letters and Zodiac signs to love hearts, leaf art and paw prints. Hand-stamping creates a beautiful and unique rustic finish, resulting in treasured pieces that will be cherished for years to come.

Using your ImpressArt metal stamps

Your ImpressArt stamping kit requires: a metal stamping hammer (1 or 2lb brass is recommended for best results), stamp guides, a steel block, stamping blanks and ImpressArt metal stamps.

  1. Stand your stamping block on a hard, even surface. Use tape or a stamp guide to hold your jewellery blank in place. This will prevent it from moving around or slipping as you work.
  2. Use a stamp guide to plan your design. Create the desired message or image straight onto the stamp guide. Use the stamp guide to achieve even spacing and alignment of images if desired.
  3. Take your stamp and hold it at a 90-degree angle on the stamping blank, making sure the ImpressArt logo is facing you. Move the stamp along the blank until you reach the desired point on the stamping guide.
  4. Hold the stamp firmly in place, making sure it is evenly pressing onto the metal blank. Ensure the hand you are holding the stamp with is anchored on the table. Strike the metal stamp with the hammer. Use medium force and strike it only once.
  5. Remove the stamp, stamp guide and any tape used to hold the guide in place.

Top tips to get the most out of your stamps

  • Make sure you hold the stamping hammer in your dominant hand. Use the other hand to hold the stamps firmly in place.
  • When dragging the stamp to align with the stamping guide, drag lightly and gently to prevent scratching the metal.
  • Assess the strength of the metal you are working with and the level of detail on the ImpressArt metal stamp to decide the force needed when hammering. Harder metals will, of course, require more force.
  • To make your design stand out, colour over the printed words or image with a Stamp Enamel Marker and then swiftly rub it off. This will leave dark ink sitting within the indents of the design.
