(During this time it is important to keep your furnace door closed.) The pad contains an organic binder which needs to burn out. This could cause a slight odour, but is harmless. If you open the door too soon during this process, the pad will more than likely flame up and smoke. Keeping the door closed will prevent this from happening. This process takes approximately an hour until your kiln is completely heated up to enamelling temperatures.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf used as a hot pad outside the furnace, it may develop some slight scorching if not “burned out” as mentioned in STEP 2 above. Hot pads should only be used on non-combustible surfaces.
